Overview
In the last 20 years direct payments to recipients have emerged as an effective way to deliver aid to vulnerable people. Evidence from 200 studies shows that direct cash transfers (CTs) have a strong impact on poverty reduction, and that they are particularly efficient in emergency situations. We want to launch a prize to support and develop cash transfers as a tool for development. We believe that appropriate use of CTs would be a step towards a more efficient and effective international aid system. We think CTs can be a trustworthy and accountable way to offer autonomy to poor people, giving them a choice over how to address their priorities and needs.
